The Path Behind the Pages
“Every story begins with a little imagination.”
An Early Eye for Form & Motion
Born and raised in San Mateo, California, Jeanne’ Kirkpatrick grew up surrounded by the quiet natural beauty and vivid coastal light of Northern California.
From an early age, her days were guided by movement and creativity. She had a happy childhood and received recognition as a track athlete at thirteen, while simultaneously earning recognition for her artwork. This dynamic interplay between kinetic vitality and visual discipline planted the seeds for her lifelong dedication to artistic craft.
Design, Space, and the Creative Craft
That lifelong affinity for visual harmony and spatial balance led Jeanne’ into the world of design. Over the course of her professional career, she worked as an interior designer for furniture stores and successfully operated her own business.
Her work in interior design refined her appreciation for warmth, tactile texture, color harmony, and spaces where people feel truly at ease—sensibilities that now gently infuse the illustrated worlds and cozy settings of her books.
Inspired by Family & Grandchildren
When Jeanne’ began writing stories for young readers, the greatest spark came from closest to home. Her grandchildren and their unique personalities directly helped inspire the characters and whimsical storyline of Mermville.
Watching their spontaneous curiosity, sense of wonder, and heartfelt interactions gave life to an imaginative community where every creature has a place and kindness bridges every distance.
A Quiet Life of Stories
Today, Jeanne’ is retired and enjoys a quiet, fulfilling lifestyle with her partner, continuing to dream up gentle adventures that remind young readers and families alike of the wonder in the everyday world.
